The truth is at least in mainland China people never say we are “asian”.

No Asian in their right mind calls themselves “Asians”. None.

I have traveled in China, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia but I have never met anyone identify themselves to be “Asian” to me.

In my experience, in the Netherlands:

Overseas Chinese might use the term Asian to describe themselves if talking to Europeans when then talk about a group of Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. People from other countries they will say Hindustans, Thai, etc. (Never Indian, because the confusion with native-Amercicans). But 99% they will say Chinese if refering to one’s self,. Furthermore I have never heard someone from HK call himself Asian. Hong Kong people will say they are Hong Kong-nese or HK-Chinese. When talking about relatives in Singapore, they say Singaporese ( and a “La” after every sentence)

Likewise only Politicians will call themselves European. Honest people will just call themselves Belg, Nederlander, Deutsch, Italiano or Francais.

Side note :In the UK Asian in the news they mean Pakistani, not Chinese, Japanee, etc.

I wanted to report your question because the assumption is totally wrong.

99.99% of us Chinese do not consider ourselves as Asians. I’ve never said I am an Asian, and I don’t think this geographical concept “Asia” makes any sense to me.

If you are talking about Asian Americans, then that is another different case. I don’t think Japanese Americans have any problems to be identified as Asian Americans.

s a mainland Chinese, I have never heard the mainland people call themselves as Asians. Mainland Chinese are extremely proud that they are Chinese rather than Asians. We have been taught "I am a proud Chinese", from kindergarten to university .

Of course, for other so-called overseas Chinese with one-tenth of Chinese descent, it is quite another matter.

So, I hope you can remember the basic fact that we true Chinese people are a proud and confident ethnic.

Honestly, as a Chinese American,I used to refer to myself as “Asian” a lot. Many overseas Chinese aren’t proud of their ethnic background as Mainland Chinese are. I used to be ashamed of my Chinese heritage due to all the racism I dealt with at school and thus I often referred to myself as “Asian” rather than “Chinese”,and i often done that when other Asian people were around. Japanese and overseas Japanese are very proud of being Japanese,unlike many overseas Chinese,and they would always refer to themselves as “Japanese.” Japan is more modernized,rich,and advanced,unlike the rest of Asia,so it’s normal for Japanese to feel superior to other Asians. You can find a lot of racists making fun of Chinese people,but people making fun of Japanese or Koreans are much less.
